CBS Sports Rebrand

Challenge:

Long time RCS client CBS Sports was looking for a complete graphics rebrand across all platforms to coincide with their coverage of Super Bowl 50.

Solution:

To celebrate the Super Bowl’s 50th Anniversary, CBS commissioned an entirely new on air graphics package with Troika delivering the redesign and RCS providing the real-time graphics build and workflow tools. Comprising 252 unique elements developed by the RCS team, the package featured an eyebar, lineups, fullscreens, side slabs, lower thirds and other special elements, which appeared throughout CBS’ live Super Bowl 50 broadcast as well as its web and digital streams.

To deliver results that would align with fan expectations for the big day, collaboration between CBS, Troika and RCS began in July 2015. As the look was designed and conceptualized, RCS worked in concert to not only build the Vizrt animations but also write more than 122 interfaced scripts for live and historical data retrieval, in addition to the custom software to run the in-game score bar. An advanced graphics programming interface (GPI) built by RCS enabled CBS to control three channels of elements simultaneously, making transitions and animations seamless. The RCS crew was on site at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara the week leading up to and during the event to keep everything on track.

Following the Super Bowl show CBS and RCS began to map out the graphics, workflow, and custom software for the 2016 NFL Season. The remit was a tall order - two cohesive but distinct graphics packages for the network to deploy throughout the regular and post season – one for its NFL studio show and another for its game coverage. Drawing on CBS’ Super Bowl 50 experience, RCS recreated several scripts and Vizrt scenes, developed new control applications and enhanced CBS’ front-end graphics software, while also updating Super Bowl 50’s gold color palette to match CBS’ traditional red, blue and silver look.

Nominated for several Sports Emmy® Awards, including one for “Outstanding Live Graphic Design,”  CBS’s Super Bowl 50 production took home three awards at the 37th Annual Sports Emmys ceremony on May 10, 2016 – including the coveted “Outstanding Live Sports Special” honor, in addition to “George Wensel Technical Achievement” and “Outstanding Technical Team Remote” Awards for its technical innovation on the production.

Conclusion:

Long time client CBS Sports was looking for a full network rebrand ahead of their presentation of Super Bowl 50. RCS worked with CBS Sports and Troika to build out a NFL full graphics package, production workflow and custom software for the Super Bowl and 2016 NFL regular and postseason.
